Medieval fun in Kilmallock

return back
During August medieval madness will be coming to the town of Kilmallock, as people get involved in one of the largest battle re-enactments. The town will host the event from the 21st to the 23rd of August, delighting residents and guests alike with the colourful displays of history. The battle re-enactments you will see are drawn from a number of different periods throughout history, and will provide a good flavor of times past. Over 200 people are estimated to be taking part in acting out scenes from Roman, Norman and Medieval times. More modern history will also be depicted with battles from the first and second world wars along with the American and Irish wars of Independence being shown.

The re-enactments have been designed to be visually accurate with participants donning the battle dress of the day to fight out their wars. In addition there will be a variety of military vehicles displayed on the day so that visitors can further explore the history of the battles and get a sense for how they were fought. Those taking part have travelled from across Europe to put on this display with events taking place all day Saturday and Sunday. To add to the flavour of the event there will also be a medieval market for visitors to browse, which will be selling a wide selection of items including arts, crafts, wood carving, candles and jewellery. A number of fun activities such as face painting and a puppet show for the kids have also been scheduled, so there truly is something for everyone. For those who would like to find out more about the life and times of our medieval ancestors the inaugural Mannix Joyce Lecture will be presented by Senior Lecturer at N.U.I, John Bradley. In addition this year the Dominican Priory in Kimallock will be hosting the Teaspach Theatre Company, who will be performing The Midnight Court, a hilarious tale of the battle of the sexes. Visitors can purchase tickets to all the events and performances over the weekend at the Friar’s Gate Theatre.

The town of Kilmallock, is located in south County Limerick near the border with County Cork. It is renowned for being a sporting town steeped in history, with plenty of interesting features to keep you entertained. Kilmallock is the perfect place to host the Medieval festival as back in history is was considered to be one of the main urban areas in Ireland during the late medieval period. Evidence of this can be seen throughout the city, with the most spectacular example being the remains of the medieval walls which once circled the settlement for as protection. Getting to Kilmallock is simple and if you are a visitor to Ireland than hiring a car would be a good way to get there. Car rental is easy to arrange with pickup points available at the major airports such as Dublin. If you wanted to come by train please be aware that the Dublin-Cork railway line no longer stops in Kilmallock, as the station is now closed and the next nearest stop would be Charleville, in County Cork.
